Author Bio: Christian Caujolle created the photo agency l'Agence VU in 1986. He has curated numerous international exhibitions and published monographs on a wide range of photographers. Quentin Bajac was curator of the Musée d'Orsay from 1995 to 2003. Today he is photography curator at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou. Brigitte Govignon is an art historian and creator of the "Small Encyclopedia" series, of which this book is the fifth title. She also works for the French publisher Gallimard on its Folio collection.

Carlos Fuentes' flawless introduction is so well written it hurts. Beautiful prose:
"Wounds scar the whole landscape of Mexico. Some are ancient and seem to have healed. Others, despite their age, still gape. The newest intermingle with the oldest. The most painful are those which throb beneath the country's skin, on the point of bursting and mingling their blood with the rest. Mexico is one enormous wound, a wall tattooed with bullet-holes, a prickly pear gashed with a knife, an altar of golden tears. But in front of the wall, a man with a cigar between his teeth, hat firmly on his head, collarless shirts, hands tucked into his belt, stares at the firing squad and grins from ear to ear. Go fuck your mother."
"Somebody dies so that the rest can live. There are no living heroes in Mexico. Once, the gods were alive. They too have died, this time on the Cross."
And the photographs are not half bad either :D
