Hollywood in the Holy Land: Essays on Film Depictions of the Crusades and Christian-Muslim Clashes
Trying to locate books that are written on the femme fatale as a literary device is more difficult than for film noir. Grossman does at least nod to the literary in her chapter on what she terms Victorinoir. Still never can understand why academics have to create such hideous neologistic terminology. Grossman's premise in this book is interesting as she wants to examine the narrative through which the femme fatale is constructed by the noir film. It is the victimization of the femme fatale by the overly masculine men in film noir and how she attempts to gain agency that Grossman argues seems to subvert patriarchy. It is the idea of victimization that is bothersome. It is preferable to consider the femme fatale as a tragic figure, a la Elizabeth Bronfen, this lends her more dignity and character. As a feminist engagement Grossman's work is interesting, but still seems insufficiently nuanced.
