The editors have compiled works from over 50 poets, including the verse of Isabella Valancy Crawford, Bliss Carman, Archibald Lampman and Duncan Campbell Scott, and several long narrative poems, including Oliver Goldsmith's The Rising Village and Crawford's Malcolm's Katie.

Canadian Poetry from the Beginnings Through the First World War
I actually really enjoyed this poetry collection. It has the works of poets that I didn't even know existed, and was pleasantly surprised to see how many women poets were being represented. One criticism that I have is that French Canadian poets are barely represented in this collection. It isn't difficult to look up French Canadian poets and put their translated works into a collection that is meant to represent Canadian poetry.
There are poets that come from Quebec, but doing a bit of research into the poets, I don't believe that most of these poets ever considered themselves to be French Canadian.
Overall, this was a great introduction to many of Canada's poets and their works. I enjoyed many of the poems that are in this book and especially loved exploring the message and themes of the poems that are represented here.
