As improbable as it seems, I've finished reading this book! It took me three times longer to read it than it took Grant to write it, but he was under a huge deadline that I was/am not facing. It was an incredibly good book. What impressed me the most was his generosity toward every soldier under him for the roles they played in winning the war. He had a few negative comments about some of the officers who served with him, but even then he was not unnecessarily mean in his comments. He made his point and moved on.
We've all read well-known authors and admired them and their work. I felt that I really came to know him, maybe because his military life and presidency were so public. He wasn't perfect, but we may be better off today for his place in history.
