Two new Start with Science books introduce kids to core science concepts through engaging stories, fresh illustrations, and supplemental activities.

One day Oscar comes across a nest made of twigs and leaves, perfect for sheltering eggs. It makes him wonder about all the things we use — like glass, paper, plastic, and cloth. With the help of his friend Snail, the curious kitten learns why we choose specific materials to do different jobs, where the materials come from, and what useful qualities they have.

Children's Literature

This is another book in the "Start with Science" series that is aimed at young children. Oscar, a very curious kitten, likes to investigate his surroundings. In this account, Snail comes along and helps Oscar understand what he sees in a garden. Snail describes the properties of a newly built bird's nest and explains why a feather floats while a stone does not. When it begins to rain, they both take shelter in a greenhouse. Once inside, Snail explains how glass is made and how it helps provide sunlight for plant growth. Snail also provides information on how other things, such as paper, plastic and bread are produced. When another cat named Poppy appears, Oscar tells her all that he has learned from Snail. The final two pages contain a recap of what is covered in the book, as well as an index. Young children will easily relate to the digitally designed illustrations which use both bright and soft colors and simply drawn objects. Oscar, with his very large eyes and heart-shaped body patch is very appealing. If the science section is lacking books for young children, consider placing this title on the purchase list.
