Richard Nixon and the Rise of Affirmative Action: The Pursuit of Racial Equality in an Era of Limits Book

This is the story of how an Orthodox Jew from Pennsylvania became a highly respected reporter in Montgomery, Alabama. He's covered everything from racially motivated bombings in Birmingham in 1965 to the black churches that were destroyed by arson in the mid-1990's. (He stood over the officers as they disarmed the 1965 bombs--only later did he realize that he would have been killed if the bombs had been better made.)He seems to have spoken to (and disagreed with!) just about every prominent figure in Alabama during that time. As a state resident, I especially appreciate the attention he gives to small-town Alabama, where so much of our state history is made. This is an excellent introduction to the South from an interesting perspective.
