Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Eh. This could have been a much more fun book - it's the parade after all! - but it was very very dry. Each chapter covers a decade of the parade, starting with the inaugural run 1924 and covering the next 80 years (this book was published in 2004), and has a few pages of description covering 10 years followed by pictures.
The writing was oh-so dry. I hoped for little stories and blurbs about entertaining/interesting/funny parade occurrences, but it was very technical. For example, "On November 26, 1931, at 1:30 p.m., with the leading band playing "Roll On, You Mississippi, Roll On," the eighth edition of Macy's Christmas Parade marched ahead." YAWN.
I have only been to the parade once in 2008, generally don't watch it on TV, and very little of the book was dedicated to balloon characters that I recognize from pop culture I grew up with. I think someone a bit older and with a closer association with the parade would enjoy it much more.
The pictures are great though. It is so interesting to see the evolution of the balloons and I really enjoyed some of the old parade posters that were featured at the beginning. And, I learned some interesting facts like all of the balloons were donated to the military during WWII because rubber was needed, and several years have seen helium shortages so air and scaffolding were used to move around the balloons.
All in all, it was a super fast read because of all the pictures and if you just wanted to give it a skim I think you would get the vast majority of the interesting facts.
