Examines the causes and effects of the Mexican War and its importance in the westward expansion of the United States.

Tina Dybvik - Children's Literature

Haberle scatters sidebars among the names and dates to highlight facts about the period, e.g., "Ulysses S. Grant wrote the Mexican war was one of the most unjust ever waged." A photograph of General Santa Ana's wooden leg (which was captured in battle) and the origin of the "Doughboy" nickname (which evolved from the word adobe) are two examples that add interest to the straightforward narrative. The text defines "Manifest Destiny" as the belief that God wanted the U.S. to control North America, and faith plays a strong role throughout the book. Some U.S. soldiers (The San Patricios) join with Mexico to defend the Catholic faith, and in a 1846 battle, Mexicans surrender when U.S. troops threaten to destroy their Monterrey Cathedral. The book concludes with a reference glossary, and a timeline that covers from Hernando Cortes' conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521 to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. This entertaining anecdotal history is part of the "Let Freedom Ring" series. 2003, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
