Fantastic Tales: Visionary and Everyday Book

This is a fine collection of weird stories chosen by Calvino. In fact, that single sentence is really all you need to hook you into reading it, but I should say a bit more.
These aren't "fantasy" tales, not "science fiction", and not "supernatural", per say, though there are elements of all those things as we know them now. But this is about how they were thought of then, and there is a comfortable, universal mixture of all them. The best common denominator to these widely varying tales is their root in the everyday, the sudden exposure of something amiss or awry in the natural order of things is the undercurrent here.
Many of the selections are great and written by outstanding authors you've probably never read (I hadn't). Standouts would be "The Sandman" by E.T.A. Hoffmann, "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, among others, but familiar names are represented, like Poe, Wells, Dickens, Andersen, etc.
