An introduction to the sources and characteristics of light.
Although the sun, electricity, and shadows are things that are easy to take for granted, children will learn to appreciate light in many different ways after reading this title. It has examples that young readers can easily relate to and try for themselves, such as observing the straight beam of light from a flashlight, which proves that light travels in a line. Up-to-date color photos also demonstrate concepts such as the ability that light has to bend; one can see this by pointing a flashlight toward a mirror in a dark room. Rainbows and shadows are also covered simply enough to keep young readers' attention while they learn about the cause and effect that light has on different things. This title is part of the "Rookie Read-About Science" series and includes an index and a "words you know" section, accompanied by photographs from the pages the words are used on. 2004 (orig. 1963), Scholastic Inc, Ages 4 to 7.
