Ella in Europe: An American Dog's International Adventures
The only saving grace, the thing that allowed me to trudge on with reading this book, was Ella and the pictures of her. (Although I do give kudos for Mr. Konik for being a good dog daddy and for putting her wonderful demeanor to good use, helping sad, sick, and lonely people to smile, even just a little.)
I can give you a succinct summary that will save you from reading this book because you will have the entire idea: "Oh my God, I can't believe my dog is really inside _____ (fill in the blank) in _____ (name of country). I can't believe we're really ______ (fill in the blank)." End of story.
All throughout reading this, I had an image of a thirteen year old girl giddy over her first crush. "Oh my God, I can't believe Billy just accidentally sort of made eye contact with me when he happened to walk into the same. Room. As. ME!!!!" Ok, I get it: you can't take your dog very many places in the US, but you can in most places throughout Europe. After the third or fourth time, at least, it shouldn't have been such a big deal anymore.
Plus I found Mr. Konik to be very hypocritical. One moment he's poo-pooing animal lovers who believe animals should have equal rights to humans (all, I must say, so that he can justify making Ella do something she doesn't want to do just because he's the all mighty king ruling his lowly domesticated beast), and the next moment he's wondering if Ella is thinking/feeling/hypothesizing something that even I, a huge animal lover, comprehends that, as smart as dogs are, does not possibly have that high a level of thinking. One moment he's castigating people who pamper their pooches, taking them to high-end spas and feeding them caviar, and the next he's seriously contemplating buying his dog a $350 silk scarf, even going through the motions of trying several of them on her.
