Library Journal

Fagan, a sociologist and dean of graduate studies at the National University of Ireland who has published widely in the area of social development, and Munck, a sociologist in the president's office at Dublin City University who has written on international development and the impact of globalization on social exclusion, here join forces to examine the impact of globalization on security. Volume 1 covers the economic and political aspects of the issue, while Volume 2 looks at the social and cultural aspects. Instead of offering a large number of narrowly focused entries, this work contains 43 lengthy A-to-Z essays covering broader issues. Some of the economic and political topics include citizenship, food security/fisheries, global ethics and human security, imperialism, nongovernmental agencies, and terrorism, while the social and cultural aspects include such topics as consumerism, crime, health security, the Internet and human (in)security, migration, modernity, religion, and social exclusion. The essays are not overly technical and speak to a broad audience. Each includes a list of references as well as suggested further readings. BOTTOM LINE This well-written and -organized collection would be of use to readers interested in the current state of globalization and its impact on the world at large. Recommended for both academic and public libraries.—Ryan Johnson, Univ. of Mississippi, Oxford
