Beyond the Double Bind: Women and Leadership Book

This book helped me to put names and match history to no-win-situations that I've experienced in academia. It is extremely well-researched which makes it dense and slow reading. It was published in the 1990s, pre-widespread internet, and the examples would be familiar to those that were old enough at that time to recognize names from current events. The majority of the book is spent defining the bindsincluding womb/brain, silence/shame, same/different, femininity/competence, and aging/invisibility. There is a whole champter on Hillary Clinton (as First Lady) which is interesting given events that transpired later. The most forward looking section is the last chapter although there are relatively few concrete recommendations for breaking the binds. It was an interesting - if not always uplifting - read.
