A high-level overview of the Spanish fortifications built during the 16th through 18th centuries in the 'Spanish Main' area of the Caribbean and Central America. This book only touches on other aspects of the 'Spanish Main' period (pirates, conquistadors, politics, wars, treasure fleets, etc.) as they impacted the need to build fortifications to protect Spanish interests. If fortifications interest you, then you will likely enjoy this book. There are some nice illustrations of major fortifications, such as El Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico (the only included fortification I have personally visited), which help you understand the layout of fortifications of the time and why gun positions were placed where they were.
