Editorial Note - On The House
Liberated women are normally about as interesting and exciting as watching paint dry. They tend to turn off more men than they turn on, while at the same time giving the impression they never really received a good screwing from a guy—nor gave one in return. Whatever the true reason for their dissatisfaction with the status quo, PUB would prefer to give these misguised ms's the benefit of the doubt. We think you will agree that the results of our research for our Liberated Ladies in this issue are most gratifying. In fact, there's not a single one of them we would kick out of a warm bed to send out into the cold, cruel world to compete with us male chauvinists.
Along with our own brand of thinking on that score with our line-up of lovelies, PUB zeroes in upon the girls who practice the world's oldest profession. The first of the three pieces, "Semi-Pro Hookers," revolves around several "amateurs" in that growing legion of part-time prostitutes. By Roy Harper, the article is based upon personal interviews with several of these intrepid types, from housewife to airline stew.
An interview of a quite different type is "The Making of a Madam," starting on page 67. This true account of how a sweet young girl became first initiated into sex, then into being a paid companion, later a call girl, and finally a madam in New York City is faithfully transcribed from a tape recording made in the presence of her psychiatrist. How PUB came into possession of this revealing "confession" is a story in itself and one better left to your own imagination.
The anchor piece among those on Red Light America ("What's a Sweet Young Whore Like You Doing In a Place Like This?") gets inside the imagination of a young man cruising the red light district. Writer Larry Silver lives in Harrisburg, Pa., but refuses to tell us in which city his fictional offering is set.
Off in another direction is a set of features we thought you would like. One is "Dirty Dick's in London Town" (page 75), an account of a most unusual English pub by a most prolific Canadian writer. Paul Brock lives on rugged Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest. A specialist in food, drink, and sexual subjects, and a former correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, Paul makes his own home-brewed beer, wines, and aphrodisiac gourmet food when he's not off sailing and fishing for typee or king salmon.
Coming close on the heels of "Dirty Dick's" appears "The Passivity Factor" by Robert E. Harders, Jr. It's about the kind of bum's rush all of us would like to get. PUB is especially proud to publish this first appearance in print of one of Robert's short stories. Robert, 24, lives in Elmsford, N.Y., and is an aspiring actor, although he intends to keep on writing.
At the other end of the spectrum is Shorty Thorn who, at age 71, is just starting to sketch out a new career as an artist—after years as a cowpuncher. Honest injun! Ron Butler profiles Shorty in "Doing It" on pages 92, 93.
No issue would be complete without our regular features. "Pub of the Month" comes from Cleveland this time around, from newspapernlan Frank Drake. If you've been with us before, you'll notice we've expanded the feature to two pages.
Likewise with "Sex In Your Town," more accounts of delicious goings-on from you, the reader.
Colette Cachet stays on her beat with "Pub Pourri," and Bill Thomas has happened upon another offbeat vignette in "Ye Olde Cock & Bull Story."
And that's just about the whole story for PUB in August. Have fun with us and we hope to see you next month when we present a selection of campus cuties we wish we had known, plus some other revelations to raise your old school spirits.
