Pinpointing the exact origin of a style—especially in the fields of fashion,
art, music, literature and cinema—is often difficult. Who was first to wear
the string bikini, paint in the Impressionistic style, play bluegrass, write in
iambic pentameter or use a dissolve shot? Opinions vary, and the true innovator
is sometimes lost in a crowd of more popular copiers.
Now ask any number of "experts" which men's magazine can take credit
for consistently achieving the highest-quality photography of women. Since December
1953, when 70,000 copies of PLAYBOY first hit the newsstands with the Marilyn
Monroe cover and centerspread, the answer was clear. With that issue, PLAYBOY
started a revolution, not only in glamour photography but in magazine journalism
and design, and ultimately in the lifestyle of an entire country.
And although, over the years, many imitators have tried to duplicate PLAYBOY'S
style, they found PLAYBOY cannot be successfully copied; it is in a distinct class
of its own—both innovator and popularizer—with a spirit so alive and
ever-changing that the results defy imitation. The same holds true for the women
who are photographed for the magazine's pages every month. The PLAYBOY woman is
as impossible to duplicate as she is beautiful, for she, too, is constantly changing
and growing. She is spontaneous and sexy, adventurous and alluring, fresh and
fun-loving, and always happy and proud just being herself.
In The Girls of Playboy, published in 1973, we selected—out of more than
10,000 possibilities-169 photographs of girls who had appeared in the magazine
and who we thought best reflected PLAYBOY's special joie de vivre. Your overwhelming
response to that first collection gave us all the excuse we needed for an encore
performance. So now we bring you The Girls of Playboy 2, the second in what could
easily become an annual series of photo albums of the women who have made PLAYBOY
the most successful and distinctive men's magazine in history. Within these pages—all
in full color—you'll meet dozens of Playmates, the stars of our most popular
feature—including favorites Mercy Rooney and Karen Christy and such outstanding
Playmates of the Year as Claudia Jennings, Martel Cole and Cyndi Wood. There's
also a representative sampling of cottontails from the nearly 1000 Bunnies who
staff 17 Playboy Clubs and four hotels, including 1972 Bunny of the Year Ruthy
Ross and Jet Bunny Lieko English, who also became Playmates. Other stellar attractions
include young actresses like Deep Throat's Linda Lovelace and Last Tango's Maria
Schneider. More established film stars such as Raquel, Ursula and Brigitte are
here, too. Veruschka is one of the models represented; Fran Jeffries, one of the
singers; Paula Kelly, one of the dancers. Beautiful and talented girls from Paris,
Australia, Israel, Munich and other lands are well represented, too—plus
writers, poets and even a circus performer.
Choose your favorites if you can. We gave up trying. We love them all.
