Dr. Stephen Krebs, an authority on grapes and winemaking, describes in his foreword, Agoston Haraszthy's seminal work on grape culture and the making of wines. Haraszthy was born to an aristocratic family and, because of his political views, fled to America where he first moved to Wisconsin, then to California. His activities were varied. He was perhaps best known for his contributions to the development of California's grape cultivation and wine production, which is the subject of this book. For many years, this report to the legislature of California was used as a major reference for students of viticulture and enology.
