The problem with rating truly great classics of literature, especially Sufi literature, is that these 'polished mirrors' reflect you. What you rate is not the material itself, but your own understanding of the material, your own state of mind and heart, your own degree of spiritual insight.
It has been said with regard to the Russian Chekhov that a writer is a man 'bound by his conscience to tell the whole truth, with the objectivity and the indifference to bad smells of a chemist'. Of course, how one responds to the truth is indicative only of one's own character in that stretch of time.
Maulana has unassailable repute, his Persian Masnavi being placed next only to the Quran, as one removed completely from worldly affairs and having nothing to do with the world except to show it its own face. The stories are wonderfully telling, but there is a certain grandeur in Whinfield's renderings of the tales which, to my mind, Nicholson's translations cannot quite capture. The meanings of some of them were obscure to me and it was sad to lose them as companions, while a commentary would have been all that was needed to forge the understanding and the bond meant to be forged between them and the reader. I am very glad I found this selection in the library though- very much by accident, in very curious circumstances! I am convinced it was fated so to be.

When you reach the bottom of the well of your own nature, then you will know that the wickedness is in you.
