Mala of the Heart: 108 Sacred Poems
To put it very simply, a mala is like a Buddhist rosary. Some schools of Buddhism use malas in much the same way as prayer beads. They meditate, recite mantras, or count breaths for each of the 108 beads.
Mala of the Heart is a book of 108 poems. All of the poems or thoughts are short, just a few lines. The editors have brought together a lot of Rumi, Hafiz, and Lalla works. However, poems are also written by people such as St. Catherine of Siena, St. Francis of Assisi, and W.B. Yeats.
There are a number of different ways to use these poems. I tended to use them as a focus of contemplation. In this way, one need not even use a mala.
