Psychotherapy with African American Women: Innovations in Psychodynamic Perspectives and Practice
Katie Cannon's Black Womanist Ethics is a wonderful study. Cannon's work here ranges from history to biography to literary analysis to theological ethics. She begins with a study of how Black women have been treated in society from the 1600s until the mid to late twentieth century, discussing the ways that sexism and racism have combined forces to render Black women particularly powerless in American society. She then moves to develop an ethic using the life and fiction of Zora Neale Hurston. Here she identifies three ethical modes for Black women: invisible dignity, quiet grace, and unshouted courage. Cannon demonstrates these modes of ethical being-in-the-world both through a biography of Hurston and through an examination of her fiction and folklore. Finally, Cannon turns to theological ethics through Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr., arguing for an ethic of communal love and experiential wisdom.
This book is truly excellent, a brilliant work of theological ethics that opens up new sources for ethical reflection. The only weakness is that it is clearly a dissertation and thus reads like one, containing many block quotes and literature surveys. This does not hamper the content in any significant way.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone concerned with issues of race and gender.
