Thrust into bondage on a Texas plantation during the Civil War, twelve-year-old Josiah, a freeborn Philadelphia black, learns his "place" while maintaining his dignity.
Gr 6-10When he is captured by Confederate troops in the Battle of Sabine Pass, Texas, a free-born black is forced into bondage as a slave. Josiah Williams, 12, is from Philadelphia and has never experienced or seen slavery firsthand. Forced into working for Judge Diamond on his plantation, Josiah must rely upon his intelligence and bravery to survive. Despite his despair and unhappiness, the boy gives his loyalty to the Diamonds, and they come to trust him enough to offer him a postwar future on their new cattle ranch. Although the young Josiah is strong and easy to identify with, the rest of the characters are stereotyped, from Beulah the cook to the cruel foreman, Dawson, to that "steel magnolia," Mrs. Diamond. An unnecessary purchase.Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN
