The End Play Book

The novel tells the story of Gungoo's short visit to her grandmother's house; she was sent by her mother in a mission. From the very beginning of the novel, Gungoo kept trying to tell her grandmother that her mum wants to live with her in the same home. However, she was not able to do so and she kept on delaying her mission till the end of the novel. Through a good number of flashbacks we get to know about the past of the family. Gungoo works as a magazine reporter and she was asked to write an article about joint families because she belongs to one of them. While she was reading in the library about her family's past, she was shocked to discover that her family's wealth was gained through stockpiling the wheat during the war time. She realized that her home was built on "the skulls of people" who starved to death during the famine. In addition, she got to know through her brother that her father had an illegal relationship wth her aunt who lives with them in the same home, in the fifth floor. To avenge herself, she refused to live with her family any longer, and decided to live with a man called Shiv, as a mistress. However, her grandmother refused to allow Gungoo's mother to live with her. Gungoo's mother decided then to live in Pakistan with Shafi Ahmed, the man she loved but was not allowed to marry because he belongs to a different religion, Islam.
