Conversations with Professor Y
In between writing laborious fictionalised memoirs of wartime and harping on the theme of man’s irredeemable beastliness, Céline cut loose with this flippant ramble on the mediocrity of the French literary establishment in the 1950s. Talking to the soi-distant Professor Y, the fictional Louis leads the staid cacademic around a park, torturing him with insults on his unread manuscript with Gallimard, while offering up a sort of manifesto of his own literary “gimmick”, i.e. his singular style, i.e. the coruscating vernacular rantings in long paragraphs besieged by ellipses, where clauses to and fro like hiccups in the halls of hell. Céline’s commitment to only writing the things other writers would leave out, and rubbing the reader’s nose in them with a maniacal cackle, is aflame in this one, all the while cheekily laying the foundations for the explosion of literary creativity that followed in 1960s France.
