Women in Islam: From Medieval to Modern Times Book

Excellent historical approach to gender in Islam. This book documents what an active role women have played throughout Islamic history. It clarifies what customs related to women predated Islam and how the passages in the Koran that directly pertain to women have been interpreted differently at different times (often to fit the political climate). It also got me thinking about how European colonial powers have only strengthened partriarchial authority by using the Muslim world's treatment of and attidude towards women as an excuse to dominate Muslim countries. Because of this, women's rights are often associated with "westernization" in the Middle East. Complete with beautiful paintings and illustrations.
