What are the qualities in teaching that move beyond the mere delivery of information to deeply and personally affect student lives and values? This text is an investigation of teaching based on the premise that new insights about teaching can be gained by viewing and conceptualizing teaching as though it were an art, and that its practice shares a great deal in common with the arts. By using aesthetic theory, artistic assumptions and philosophical interpretations, a conceptual analysis of classroom teaching is sought that will complement, or possibly challenge, the definitions and research findings that have been developed by the social scientists and educational theorists.
