This book is a Reader -- part of the Going to Egg Island Kit, but is also sold separately. This is the first in a series of elementary math curricular texts, Math in a cultural Context: Lessons Learned From Yup'ik Eskimo Elders. Using the story of a young Yup'ik girl's first trip to gather eggs as the context, Yup'ik concepts of counting and grouping are introduced, and examples in the text use items commonly found in the Yup'ik culture, from foodstuffs, to tools and everyday objects. Writing under the auspices of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, the text focuses on Alaska's Yup'ik natives, however, classroom trials in various city schools outside of Alaska indicate that non-native children find this approach equally engaging.

Building a Fish Rack
Picking Berries
Salmon Fishing
