This YA fantasy/scifi has lots of twists and turns and keeps you guessing until the thrilling end.
When Tarl discovers that he has inherited the powers of his Light Keeper mother, he is thrown into confusion. The light paths have become unbalanced and Tarl's uncle calls his nephew from forced Dormancy to help fight this potentially devastating anomoly. But reawakening Tarl's powers also stirs secreted memories, and his fight for truth threatens to overwhelm his fight agains the catastrophe that is about to destroy their world.
One thing he certainly didn't count on was Opal. She is beautiful and mysterious with grey eyes that see right into his soul.
There are some great characters here: Umbra, the Light Worker who is blind and thinks of Tarl as her own son; Rembue, the soft-hearted uncle who, although quick to anger, is just as quick to let a new idea take his thoughts away on a completely different tangent; and the Altai, clumsy, food loving natives, taken in by Rembue in Atlas Mountain.
This is a great read with unexpected turns taking you on a wild journey with a very satisfying finish. Highly recommended.
