Safari day dawns on the Savannah. The African light gives the sky colors seen nowhere else on Earth. Soon, an amazing array of wild animals are yawning, screeching, and growling to life. Meet the elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and the laughing hyenas of the wilderness and find out who’s friends with whom and why!

Children's Literature

The superb photographs associated with National Geographic Magazine are featured with brief text designed to engage young children in the adventure of a safari. The first spread shows three safari vehicles parked near a herd of elephants. The text reads, "I'm going on safari. What will I see?" The journey is then personalized for the reader, "I see elephants spray, just for me. I see elephants spray on safari." The pattern continues as the participant sees lions play, rhinos run, giraffes eat, zebras graze, and hippos soak. The last spread shows a variety of animals gathered at a water hole. The inside back cover offers illustrated directions for doing the Splishy Splashy Elephant Dance. An introductory note to parents helpfully suggests that they read the book with their children several times, and soon the youngsters will be able to read it by themselves. Part of the "Pre-Reader" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
