In his poetry as well as his essays, Simic keeps the diction simple but elegant, conjuring complex ideas and lively images of things. Where imagination takes a backseat (and Simic is moral rather than poetic) is when he speaks of things political, when injustice is allowed to exist within social structures meant to protect people. His essays are short and his subjects diverse. A very lively read.
