British dramatist, novelist, essayist, poet, and critic Cumberland (1732-1811) originally published his memoirs in a large quarto format in 1806, but relented the next year with a smaller volume containing the same text with supplemental material and an index. It quickly became a major source of information on the theater, politics, and society of his time. Another edition appeared in 1856 and was reprinted in 1969. Dircks (emeritus, St. John's U.) reprints Cumberland's second edition with an introduction, a new index, and footnotes that explain references in the text and cross-reference to other passages in it. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
