The Man Who Was President for a Day: And Other Inspiring Stories about the Presidents
I really enjoyed this book. I have read 5 or 6 books about Abraham Lincoln and this one is very unique. It isn't a traditional story at all. The author was commissioned to paint the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and spent 6 months at the White House on the project. This book is a collection of interactions with the president as well as some letters and documents from others at the time. It includes very intimate details about Abraham Lincoln and helps one understand more deeply his character. This is my favorite exchange: President Lincoln, in response to a clergyman who said that he "hoped the Lord was on our side" said this, "I am not at all concerned about that, for I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the LORD's side."
