Here is a vital fusion of Latin America magical realism with Arabic geometric and mystical imagery, written in a style the author calls a "prose of intensities."
Alberto Ruy Sánchez has written many works of fiction as well as literary and art criticism. He was an editor of Octavo Paz's Vuelta and is now editor and chief of Artes de Mexico.
Mark Schafer has translated works by Virgilio Piniera and, with Cedric Belfrage, The Book of Eduardo Galeano.

Mogador: The Names of the Air
Una breve historia contada con la mayor sutileza posible. Ruy Sánchez coquetea con una prosa suave para desenvolver a una señorita que es toda ella piel seductora y mirada perdida.
Fatma es la ausencia convertida en mujer. Se trata de un cuerpo que atrae por su vacÃo y se mueve entre olas y horizontes. Fatma fantasmal, provocará murmullos a su alrededor acerca de por qué la chica está tan absorta en sólo mirar por la ventana y mecer los cabellos; los banqueros creerán que hizo malas inversiones, los carpinteros dicen que sus muebles están podridos, los pescadores dirán que extraña el mar, las púberes dicen que perdió a un amor. Asà se construye el universo alrededor de Fatma quien no tiene el menor reparo en hacer contacto con nada que no sea el abandono.
Muy pronto, la gente de Mogador temerá la peor de las supersticiones y la dejará en el olvido aún más, pero Fatma seguirá siendo atractiva y onÃrica que seguirá generando consecuencias entre quienes la miran y la pretenden en su solitaria ventana.
