It seems that the magical age of four or five brings on a tremendous interest in Dinosaurs. Our public library features many books and videos; the second grade teacher at our local school does a semester long study of the amazing creatures that once lived on this earth. I think this book will be adored by the dinosaur distracted child. The book explains the history of dinosaur discoveries and the role of paleontologists. It introduces the role of good field notes in searching a dinosaur site and how to bring those mysterious pieces home safely. A section about dinosaur names tells the reader the history and language sources of the names. An example of a day's notebook entry gives the reader a sample of the proper way to handle the records of their discovery. Then the reader is ready to practice uncovering a replica of an Apatosaurus skeleton that is included in the kit. The handbook shows how paleontologists might track the dig with drawings of the project, field notes and the numbering of the pieces.
