How the World Began Book

I enjoyed this tale of one woman's resourcefulness during the time of famine in 1930's Ukraine. The illustrations are by Michael Martchenko, whom I like, although this time I found two places where the illustrations didn't match the text exactly. One was the illustration that went with the third page of story text. The text says Marusia "tied a babushka under her chin", but the picture shows it tied bandanna-style. Then on the ninth page of story text, it says the people in Canada "stared angrily back" at the officer who was hogging their grain, but in the picture they seem to be looking astonished or unconcerned, not angry. I do think it's important in picture books for the illustrations to accurately reflect the text.

I know that the author has written other books about the famine during Stalin's regime. Reading this picture book has made me all the more want to read her other books!!
