The exquisite creations of Fulco di Verdura (1898–1978) are noted for their glorious exuberance and refined glamour. Verdura left his ancestral home in Palermo in the mid-1920s and moved to Paris where he hoped to be a painter; his true vocation was revealed once he began designing striking jewelry for the discriminating customers of Coco Chanel.
Patricia Corbett documents Verdura's fascinating career, which took him from Paris to Los Angeles and New York. He was patronized by the rich and famous, who found that his sophisticated and flamboyant neo-Baroque style perfectly complemented their tastes. Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, among others, were devoted admirers, along with many of society's prominent figures, including the Duchess of Windsor and legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland.
Corbett was given access to all of Verdura's archives and interviewed many of his surviving patrons. Wonderful color photography of the jewelry, as well as the archival images of Verdura and the people who wore his pieces, bring the irresistible beauty and genius of Verdura's designs to life.

Verdura: The Life and Work of a Master Jeweler
Lots of eye candy in this book and so many clever ideas/themes to explore when you are considering making a crown or tiara. The crowns/tiaras in the book are gorgeous and very inspiring but the reason I can't give the book more stars is because of how the crowns/tiaras are shown and described in the book. First, the "making a base" chapter should have been at the beginning of the book. If the book is to show and explain how to make these crowns/tiaras, the process starts with making a base...so explain that part first. Second problem, the instructions for each crown/tiara are very basic. They probably would be ok, if not for the third problem I find with the book...lack of good photos showing details and specifics of each crown/tiara. Crowns/tiaras have more than just a front view to them and the book's photographs only focus on front views and some of these front views are at, what I would consider, bad angles or . I don't think the photos or the instructions for each crown/tiara does them justice. It is a fun book to look through and the beautiful art work is inspiring...but too bad the book doesn't truly highlight each crown and leave the reader desiring to see more of each project or be given a better written understanding of each.
