Wow. I love how Cavell makes philosophy ordinary, the ordinary philosophical. Here's how he describes the task during the first essay. I like that the Goodreads review had this in it too - it opened me up to the philosophical everyday, almost zen-like:
"willingness to think not about something other than what ordinary human beings think about, but rather to learn to think undistractedly about things that ordinary human beings cannot help thinking about, or anyway cannot help having occur to them, sometimes in fantasy, sometimes as a flash across a landscape."
And he does it with film! My favourite is the essay on North By Northwest.
