This book, which understands Sufi Islam as being embedded in wider social and cultural contexts, surveys the whole of the Muslim world from Sub-Saharan Africa across the Middle East to Eastern Turkestan and South Asia, with particular emphasis on Pakistan and India as its demographic centre. What distinguishes this study most clearly from the considerable number of introductions to Sufism currently available is that it offers an account of Sufi Islam from the perspective of the ethnographer as much as that of the historian of religion. Focusing on its concrete, practiced and lived forms, it shows how popular Sufism developed into the almost ubiquitous mass movement, present at all levels of Muslim society as a dynamic force until modern times. This book is a revised translation of the original German edition.

عن سعيد بن المسيب عن عبد الرØمن بن سمرة بن جندب قال خرج علينا رسول الله يوما وكنا ÙÙŠ صÙÙ‡ بالمدينة Ùقام علينا Ùقال اني رايت البارØØ© عجبا رأيت رجلا من أمتي أتاه ملك الموت ليقبض روØÙ‡ Ùجاءه بره بوالديه Ùرد ملك الموت عنه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد بسط عليه عذاب القبر Ùجاءه وضوؤه Ùاستنقذه من ذلك ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد اØتوشته الشياطين Ùجاءه ذكر الله عز وجل Ùطرد الشيطان عنه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد اØتوشته ملائكة العذاب Ùجاءته صلاته Ùاستنقذته من أيديهم ورأيت رجلا من أمتي يلهب ÙˆÙÙŠ رواية يلهث عطشا كلما دنا من Øوض منع وطرد Ùجاءه صيام شهر رمضان Ùاسقاه وأرواه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي ورأيت النبيين جلوسا Øلقا Øلقا كلما دنا إلى Øلقة طرد Ùجاءه غسله من الجنابة Ùأخده بيده Ùأقعده الى جنبي ورأيت رجلا من أمتي بين يديه ظلمة ومن خلÙÙ‡ ظلمة وعن يمينه ظلمة وعن يساره ظلمة ومن Ùوقه ظلمة ومن تØته ظلمة وهو متØير Ùيها Ùجاءه Øجة وعمرته Ùاستخرجاه من الظلمة وادخلاه ÙÙŠ النور ورأيت رجلا من أمتي يتقي بيده وهج النار وشرره Ùجاءته صدقته Ùصارت سترة بينه وبين النار وظللت على رأسه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي يكلم المؤمنين ولا يكلمونه Ùجاءته صلته لرØمة Ùقالت يا معشر المسلمين انه كان وصولا لرØمة Ùكلموه Ùكلمه المؤمنون وصاÙØوه وصاÙØهم ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد اØتوشته الزبانية Ùجاءه أمره بالمعرو٠ونهيه عن المنكر Ùاستنقذه من أيديهم وادخله ÙÙŠ ملائكة الرØمة ورأيت رجلا من أمتي جاثيا على ركبتيه وبينه وبين الله عز وجل Øجاب Ùجاءه Øسن خلقه Ùأخذه بيده Ùادخله على الله عز وجل ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد ذهبت صØÙŠÙته من قبل شماله Ùجاءه خوÙÙ‡ من الله عز وجل Ùأخذه صØÙŠÙته Ùوضعها ÙÙŠ يمينه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي خ٠ميزانه Ùجاءه Ø¥Ùراطه ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قائما على Ø´Ùير جهنم Ùجاءه ÙÙŠ الله عز وجل Ùاستنقذه من ذلك ومضى ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قد هوى ÙÙŠ النار Ùجاءته دمعته التي بكى من خشية الله عز وجل Ùاستنقذته من ذلك ورأيت رجلا من أمتي قائما على الصراط يرعد كما ترعد السعÙØ© ÙÙŠ Ø±ÙŠØ Ø¹Ø§ØµÙ Ùجاءه Øسن ظنه بالله عز وجل Ùسكن رعدته ومضى ورأيت رجلا من أمتي يزØ٠على الصراط ويØبو Ø£Øيانا Ùجاءته صلاته علي Ùأقامته وأنقذته ورأيت رجلا من أمتي انتهى إلى أبواب الجنة Ùغلقت الأبواب دونه Ùجاءته شهادة أن لا اله إلا الله ÙÙتØت له الأبواب وأدخلته الجنة .
