You Aren't Alone: The Voices of Homosexuality
I first read this in 2001, the year it came out, when I assigned it for an up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-art graduate survey of interdisciplinary methods in sexuality studies at NYU. I opened it again because I was contemplating adding the chapter on Robert Mapplethorpe ("Coffee Table Sex") to a syllabus I'm designing at an art school. I found myself reading most of the book again. He drives some people wild with his bravado, but I enjoy him. There's an energy to his prose that makes whatever he's writing about on that page seem immensely important, at the same time that his dominant aesthetic is ... devil-may-care. It's not what most people would call a "successful" book--it's uneven and incoherent--but then again it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a collection of essays on sexual subjectivity. Well worth dipping into. Not for those who dislike textual decadence.
