There is little novelty in this survey of women's roles throughout russian history. the most noteworthy aspect is that russia was quite progressive at times (e.g. women's property rights during the petrine era; the ease of divorce and abortion rights prior to the revolution). had lenin's vision been carried out prior to his death, women may have been emancipated. instead, stalin created an economy entirely dedpendent on women's labor and claimed women's liberation. with the fall of the soviet, women are in a worse position than ever with high unemployment and poverty rates. a contemporary study of russian women in the twenty-first century or a more intimitate portrait would be quite compellinig, but this summary is rather dull.
