This book describes a most terrible miscarriage of justice. On 28 March 1950 an innocent man George Kelly was executed for a double murder in Liverpool committed at the Cameo cinema where a lone gunman shot two men dead.
His conviction was quashed in 2003 when the Criminal Cases Review Commission sent the case back to the appeal court after a relevant and material statement that had been suppressed by a senior police officer was discovered in the case papers.
The second part of the book describes the case of Edward Devlin and Alfred Burns. They were executed side by side on 25 April 1952 at Walton prison in Liverpool for the murder of an elderly widow. The same senior police officer conducted the investigation into that dreadful murder also. The similarity between the two cases is remarkable. Did he collude in the death of another two innocents in relation to the evidence? They lie side by side inside the prison where they were hanged, beneath the surface of what is now a carpark. Can the Criminal Cases Review Commission be persuaded to send their cases back to the appeal court also?
In November 2011 six Members of Parliament, all members of the Democratic Unionist Party from Northern Ireland, signed an Early Day Motion calling for a debate on the restoration of the death penalty in the United Kingdom. Those who support the death penalty, and those who oppose it, will want to read this book.
