This book gives a self-contained discussion of fundamental issues in computer science. It is unique in its choice of topics, which include program semantics, grammars and automata theory, program and circuit design, concurrent programs, and compilation. The discussion focuses on basic questions, on theories and techniques for answering those questions, and on the relation between different topics. The coverage is broad, but not shallow, and brings out the excitement of what computer science is really about, ranging from the physics that allow us to build electronic computers, to the mathematics that allows us to understand our programs. Rather than presenting results in a tourist-guide style, rigorous, formal proofs and practical applications have been included. What Computing Is All About has been written as a textbook, including hundreds of exercises and the answers to many of them. The material is intended for those interested in the science of computing, primarily at the undergraduate level.
