In an effort to preserve some of St. Simons Island's heritage, Voices from St. Simons records interviews with 17 people whose connection to the island stretches back generations. These longtime residents talk about the late 1800s and early 1900s as if they occurred in the last decade. Five of the people interviewed are direct descendants of well-know planters who owned large plantations in and around St. Simons. Six interviewees are direct descendants of slaves, many of whom lived and worked on those same plantations. These interviews reveal interesting relationships between the races through the centuries. These accounts allow us to sift through the present-day layers of tourist shops and new development to reveal a time and place largely preserved only in the minds of those with long memories.
