Vision and Time is a wake up call for Africans and people of goodwill that the academic enterprise cannot continue knowledge creation with a business as usual attitude. There has to be a major transformation of the intellectual perspectives regarding Africa and Africans in the 21st century. This revised edition of 1995's "Vision, Identity and Time" explores the relationship of a geo-culturally based Africa centered paradigm in the emerging global village of the 21st century. This text argues that perceptions of world history in a multicultural world requires the acceptance of multiple perspectives. The book distinguishes between hegemonic and non-hegemonic perspectives, discusses the significance of early Nile Valley culture and outlines frameworks of analysis using examples of African American history and South African history. This book is aimed at upper level undergraduates and graduate students as well as the teaching profession who wish to understand the rapture created by the Africa centered framework. It also offers theoretical and practical solutions that will re-unify knowledge about Africa and Africans. A section of the general public would also benefit from exposure to the ideas in the book in the context of globalization. "Vision and Time" is illustrated with diagrams and maps that explain complex developments. This is a book that enables social science practitioners to meet the challenges of a diverse global village of the 21st century.
Author Biography: C. Tsehloane Keto is Deputy Vice Chancellor: Administration at Vista University, South Africa.
Though many scholars have explored the central roles that time and location play in constructing knowledge about the past, Keto (Vista U., South Africa) advocates an Africa-centered paradigm of knowledge to provide a different perspective about the critical role of historical perceptions in the construction of social knowledge. The insights, he says, are not about Africa, but are a new way of looking at humanity and the world as a whole. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
