Union Blue is the story of the oldest veterans' organization of the Civil War. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States was founded in 1865 by officers of the armed forces of the United States who served in the Civil War. More than 12,000 of the serving officers, known as companions of the first class, were members. A number of prominent civilian leaders, including all of Abraham Lincoln's Cabinet, were honorary companions.

About the Author
The Reverend Dr. Robert G. Carroon is archivist and historiographer of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. He is past commander in chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. His most recent publication in the area of Civil War history is From Freeman's Ford to Bentonville: The 61st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Mr. Dana Shoaf is a Ph.D. candidate in history from Kent State University with his dissertation being on the history of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. Mr. Shoaf is the copy editor for Columbiad magazine.
