Tugging String: A Novel about Growing up during the Civil Rights Era Book

As with many social problems, it can sometimes be challenging to understand and comprehend them as the ones who are involved if you yourself aren't involved with the issue. Surely, there were people who lived during the Civil Rights era who couldn't realize just how important it really was. This was the case for Duvy Greenberg, an ordinary twelve-year-old boy who tries his best to fit in with his football team, doesn't understand much about the world outside of his own and has a father who is a civil rights lawyer. The way Greenberg tells the story of the Civil Rights era through his past young self while adding parts of fiction is a unique and interesting concept that can often be overlooked when reading/writing about events in history. While reading, you experience Duvy's progression throughout each and every day, with his father Jack teaching him about the problems discrimination caused for people, and you achieve an understanding of the world through the eyes of the young boy, as the story still portrays Duvy as your average twelve-year-old trying to make it through life and the many hardships that come with it.
