Poetry. "Gerald Ely Sarff was born on a homestead outside Plentywood Montana in May of 1919. In 1923 his father moved the family back to the Motley-Staples area in Minnesota where the Sarff family had settled prior to the Civil War. Farming carried the growing family through the harsh years of the Depression. In 1937 Gerald, by then more often called Red, his parents Marvin and Rosamond, and four of his eight siblings came west to northern Idaho where two brothers, an Aunt and Uncle and several cousins lived. His Uncle Art Aldrich introduced the young man to the art of pole, post and shake making. Reinforcing a lesson learned on the farm, don't let anything you harvest go to waste, be it sorghum, cedar, fish or game. In the following decades Red has logged in four states, mined in one, panned gold in two states and one province, worked in mills in three, commercial fished in the waters of three, sold Christ¬mas trees in four, hunted in four, and fished in five states and four Canadian provinces. All of which have left him with a multitude of memories—and more than one story to tell. Red currently lives in Kootenai, Idaho where his daughter “holds down the fort" for him when he goes fishing or otherwise enjoying the world around him." -- "About the Author" from back of book.
