To Love a Wicked Lord
This is a fun, light read, and I've read so many romance novels by now I can appreciate how great a writer Edith Layton was. The title doesn't really match the book, but that's no big deal. Her heroine is so accurately a lady in her 20's just beginning to come to grips with herself as a person and where she fits in the world. The flimsy pretext is that she's chasing her errant fiance, whose best marked by his absence, but she's also coming to grips with the senility of her aging grandmother (her only mother figure) and her own dumb decisions. On top of it there's a romance, but the man in it is not the predictable sweep you off your feet - which is so lovely. He's allowed to be realistically complicated and often unbalanced by the quirks of our heroine. It clearly fits into the Avon romance genre, but the subverts it in clever ways. I love it.
