[Turns out that his mother, who he thought died when he was a child, was really alive this whole time (a madwoman locked in the attic a la Jane Eyre). Her husband got bored with her, locked her up and faked her death. Okay. The HUGE problem with this is that his FATHER has been dead since the hero was a teen and HE'S been head of the family. So somehow, someone has been paying these servants to take care of the mother and keep her locked up and nobody told him, the new head of the family? He never noticed he was paying for this? Exactly who was in charge of keeping up this ruse after the father died? (hide spoiler)]
