Three Tuneful Tales Book

This story is a spin on the traditional folk tale of Paul Bunyan. In this book, Paul meets Lucette and must complete three tests to prove his love for her.

I would use this book to teach about the mentor trait of ideas. Throughout the text, Lucette asks Paul to complete three tests. We find out that what she really wants Paul to do is to plant trees to replace the ones he has chopped down. The idea of the story is to take care of the forest and lakes, and all her tasks that she gives to Paul support that idea. For writing, I would use this text to show students how to think of a big idea, and then narrow the topic by providing smaller pieces that support the big idea.
This is a fun and imaginative story that could also be integrated with science, when learning about how trees affect the environment. The book level is 4.6. I could not find the exact guided reading level, but I would estimate that it is an N or O.
