No lawyer since Clarence Darrow has had such a remarkable career and successfully defended so many controversial cases as Conrad Lynn. Born into a poor Baptist Republican family, Lynn embraced and then rejected communism to become an independent defender of the oppressed and the disenfranchised in the United States and throughout the world. For many years he was the only Black lawyer handling political cases for African Americans. Lynn initiated the legal challenge that led to the desegregation of the U.S. armed forces and risked his life as a charter member of the southern Freedom Riders. He served as counsel to victims of McCarthyism, to Puerto Rican nationalists Pedro Albizu Campos and Lolita Lebron, to the Panther 21, and to the two Black children who were sentenced to twelve to fourteen years for allegedly being kissed on the cheek by a white child in the infamous North Carolina "Kissing Cases." Perhaps his best-known case is his defense of the "Harlem Six," Black teenagers falsely convicted of murder in the 1960s and vindicated only after an eight-year legal battle waged by Lynn and William Kunstler. In 1990 the NAACP gave Lynn its Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award. Since the depression era Lynn has been involved in most of the major political movements of the day and worked closely with such activist and intellectual leaders as W. E. B. Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph, C. L. R. James, Thurgood Marshall, Salvador Allende, and Malcolm X. There Is a Fountain, which concludes with Lynn's interview in 1992 with award-winning journalist Les Payne, provides an indispensable experience of the courage and unwavering radicalism of a veteran civil rights lawyer who has changed the face of the fight for racial equality and justice over the past half century.
